Moving from Dubai to the USA

Moving from Dubai to the USA

The United States remains a top destination for UAE-based professionals, investors and families. The move is rewarding but document-heavy — US immigration and customs are strict — so it pays to plan carefully. Relocate MENA manages the relocation from the UAE to the USA end to end: exit formalities, shipping and CBP customs, immigration support, and settling in. Here is what to plan for.

Before you leave the UAE

We coordinate your departure from the UAE — residence-visa cancellation, ending your tenancy and Ejari, closing utilities and banking — and collect and attest the documents your US application requires.

US visa and immigration routes

  • H-1B — employer-sponsored specialty-occupation visa, subject to a competitive annual lottery.
  • L-1 — intra-company transfer for managers and executives (L-1A) or specialised-knowledge staff (L-1B) moving within a multinational.
  • E-2 treaty investor — for nationals of a country that holds an investment treaty with the US. The UAE itself is not an E-2 treaty country, but many UAE residents qualify on a second nationality; it suits those starting or buying a US business (typically a six-figure investment upward).
  • Employment-based green cards (EB-1/EB-2/EB-3) — priority dates for UAE applicants (Rest of World) are generally favourable, though some categories carry cut-off dates that move month to month — check the latest Visa Bulletin.
  • Family routes — immediate relatives of US citizens (spouse, minor children, parents) have a direct path.

Our immigration team confirms the best route for your situation and manages the application and attestation.

Shipping your belongings and US customs

You can import your household goods duty-free if you have owned and used them abroad for at least one year and they are for your own use (newly bought items are dutiable). The mandatory document is CBP Form 3299 (Declaration for Free Entry of Unaccompanied Articles), and an ISF (10+2) filing must be lodged at least 24 hours before the vessel loads — late or missing filings carry heavy penalties. We manage the documentation and clearance — see our Transfer of Residence to the United States (CBP) service. By sea, transit from Dubai is roughly 25–35 days depending on the destination port and coast; air freight is about 3–7 days.

Cost of living and healthcare

US costs vary enormously by city and state. As an indicative 2026 guide, a one-bedroom apartment in a major city centre rents for roughly USD 2,500–4,100 a month. The biggest change from the UAE is healthcare: there is no universal public system, so comprehensive private health insurance is essential and a significant budget line for the whole family.

Item Indicative cost (USD, 2026)
One-bedroom, major-city centre (rent) ~2,500–4,100 / month
Private health insurance Essential — a major monthly cost; varies by age/coverage
Private schooling High; public schools are free (allocated by district)

Figures are indicative; your move manager helps you budget for your destination city.

Where to live, schools and settling in

From New York and the East Coast to Texas, Florida and California, each metro has a very different cost and lifestyle. If you are heading to New York specifically, see our detailed guide to relocating to New York City. Our home search and school search services help families choose the right area and schools.

Pets and vehicles

The USA admits pets that meet vaccination and health-certificate requirements, which our pet relocation team manages. Importing a vehicle involves EPA and DOT compliance and can be costly or impractical for Gulf-spec cars, so we advise whether to ship or buy locally and handle the vehicle relocation if you proceed.
