Moving from Dubai to the UK

Moving from Dubai to the UK

The UAE–UK route is one of the busiest expat corridors in the world — British professionals heading home, and Gulf-based families relocating for work, school or lifestyle. Relocate MENA manages the whole move end to end: exit formalities in the Emirates, packing and shipping, UK customs and visas, and settling in. Here is what to plan for.

Before you leave the UAE

A clean exit from the UAE matters as much as a smooth arrival. We coordinate your departure formalities so nothing is left open behind you: residence-visa cancellation, ending your tenancy and Ejari, settling DEWA and other utility accounts, closing or transferring bank arrangements, and collecting and attesting school and professional records you will need in the UK. Getting these right avoids fines and problems with any future return.

UK visas and immigration

If you hold a British passport you do not need a visa to return. Otherwise the main routes are:

  • Skilled Worker visa — requires a job offer from a UK employer with a sponsor licence, generally paying at least £41,700 or the going rate for the role. It runs up to five years and leads to settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain) after five years.
  • Family visas — for the partner, spouse, parent or child of someone settled in the UK, also a five-year route to settlement.

You apply online from the UAE. Our visa and immigration team confirms the right route, prepares the application, and arranges the document attestation it requires.

Shipping your belongings

We run a pre-move survey, then pack professionally and ship door to door. As a guide, sea freight from Dubai to the UK takes roughly 2 to 4 weeks in transit depending on the service and UK customs, while air freight is far quicker at around 1 to 2 days in transit plus handling. Your move manager gives you a realistic timeline and a clear, benchmarked quote through our international move service.

UK customs and Transfer of Residence (ToR1)

If you are transferring your normal home to the UK, you can apply to HMRC for Transfer of Residence (ToR1) relief, which lets you import your used personal effects and household goods free of import duty and VAT once approved. The application must be in order before your goods arrive, so we prepare and lodge it as part of your move — see our dedicated UK Transfer of Residence (ToR1) service.

Cost of living in the UK

London is the most expensive part of the UK; most regions are considerably cheaper. As an indicative 2026 guide:

Item Indicative cost (London, 2026)
One-bedroom flat (rent) ~£1,300–1,900 / month
Council tax (typical Band D) ~£1,900–2,300 / year
Private day-school fees ~£18,000–26,000 / year (prime schools higher)

Figures are indicative and vary widely by region; your move manager helps you budget for your destination.

Schools and the NHS

State schools are free and allocated mainly by catchment area, so where you live affects school options; independent (private) schools charge the fees above. On healthcare, most visa applicants pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (around £1,035 per year) as part of the visa, which gives access to the National Health Service (NHS) on the same basis as a UK resident — GP, hospital and emergency care free at the point of use. Our school search service helps families secure the right places.

Pets and vehicles

Pets: dogs, cats and ferrets can enter the UK without quarantine if they meet the rules (microchip, valid rabies vaccination, and for dogs a tapeworm treatment) and travel by an approved route — our pet relocation team manages the schedule and paperwork. Vehicles: the UK drives on the left and Gulf-spec cars can be costly or impractical to register, so we advise whether shipping your car or buying on arrival makes more sense, and handle the vehicle relocation if you proceed.
